Privacy policy

Your choices about personal information matter to Body & Soul Magazine. Below, we explain what we hold, why we need it and your rights.

Who is in charge

Tobias Hutchins runs Body & Soul Magazine as editor. Decisions about personal information are his responsibility. To reach him by post, use the registered address on Contact. For guidance on sending material to the editor, visit Contribute.

What we keep and why

Reading requires neither an account nor a sign-up. Reader accounts and comments are not available. We use no ad networks. We do not sell or swap personal information.

Visit statistics depend on your choice in the cookie banner at the foot of the screen. Google Analytics loads only when you press Accept. Pressing Reject or leaving the choice unanswered keeps that code from loading.

With your consent, it records the pages opened, approximate location, device type and how you arrived. We use the totals solely to understand which subjects interest readers.

A pitch, correction or question becomes part of our correspondence records, along with the sender's name and contact details. Keeping these lets us respond, investigate a correction or consider a pitch again.

Our cookie policy explains cookies and lets you withdraw consent whenever you choose.

People we write to

Studios, retreats, spas, app makers and other organizations sometimes publish press releases naming a contact. We may email that person, or someone listed on an organization's public contact page or in a public directory. These emails share a link when we cover their news, or invite a news submission, an article or participation in a Q&A.

The release or public listing is our only source of those contact details, published by the person or their organization. Our records pair the person's name and work email address with their organization and the relevant story link. Those records are covered by this privacy policy. You can stop these messages by answering one of our emails with the single word "remove".

The legal footing

Consent is the legal basis for visit statistics. For correspondence, we rely on legitimate interest: retaining messages allows us to answer the people who contact us.

How long we keep information

Google Analytics deletes its data after two months. Technical request logs are held briefly for service operation and protection.

We delete correspondence once two years have passed since the thread's final message. An unresolved correction or story may require us to hold it longer. You may request earlier deletion.

Outside companies

  • Google Analytics counts visits with your consent and provides the subject-interest totals described above.
  • Vercel hosts our pages and briefly logs IP addresses and requested addresses to operate and protect the service.
  • Google Search opens a search of our site when you follow the header's search link, and Google's privacy policy applies there.

Google and Vercel may handle information in the United States using safeguards accepted by UK data protection law.

What you can ask for

You may request access to your personal information, corrections to it or its erasure. You also have rights to restrict processing, object to its use and receive data in a portable form. Consent can be withdrawn.

Put your request in a letter to the editor at our registered postal address, listed on Contact. We answer data requests within one month.

Contacting us about a concern first often helps resolve it sooner. For a complaint, the UK Information Commissioner's Office can be reached by phone: 0303 123 1113. Its online complaint form is at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
