JR East has joined JR Central, JR West, JR Shikoku and JAL to connect three of Japan’s pilgrimage regions for international travelers. The Sacred Journeys initiative links Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata, the Kumano Kodo on the Kii Peninsula and the Shikoku Henro through rail, air and local transportation. Dewa Sanzan comprises three sacred mountains associated with rebirth, while the Kumano Kodo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site pilgrimage and the Shikoku Henro connects 88 temples. The companies are promoting travel centered on walking, nature, spirituality, cultural exchange and reflection.

Regional Travel Connections

The initiative is intended to direct international visitors beyond Japan’s major cities and into smaller communities. In the Dewa Sanzan region, JR East will use Joyful Train services, specially designed trains that make the journey part of the travel experience, to connect visitors with Yamagata’s landscapes, culture and regional attractions.

The companies’ long-term plan is to use the model to connect transportation, local experiences and communities across the three pilgrimage traditions. It also aims to address localized overtourism by connecting regions rather than concentrating visitors in Japan’s best-known cities.

Visitor And Wellness Figures

Japan received more than 42.6 million overseas visitors in 2025, surpassing its previous annual record, according to the JNTO. Worldwide wellness tourism expenditure was estimated at US$894 billion in 2024, according to the GWI.

The program presents travel through mountains, forests, villages and communities as part of the experience, whether visitors are walking ancient trails or traveling on JR East’s Shinkansen and local trains.

Pilgrimage Travel Access

Takako Tsutsumiguchi, Division Senior Manager at East Japan Railway Company, said:

“Japan's pilgrimage routes offer travelers something that goes beyond seeing a destination. They offer travelers time to walk, reflect, and reconnect with themselves while experiencing the culture and nature of each region. Through collaboration across our five companies, we hope to make these journeys more accessible to international visitors and create new reasons for them to return to Japan.”
