An angel number is a short sequence of repeating digits, such as 111, 777 or 1919, that some people notice again and again. In New Age writing, that repetition is read as a message from an angelic guide rather than a coincidence.
What angel numbers are
An angel number is a sequence of two to four digits built from a repeated number or a repeated pattern. Writers on the subject include mirrored numbers too, such as 1010 and 1212. People tend to notice them on clocks, license plates, receipts, phone numbers, addresses and page numbers.
The meaning given to them depends on who is asked. Many people see angel numbers simply as fun coincidences, while numerologists and people with a spiritual practice read more into them. A plain explanation sits alongside the spiritual one: once you have noticed a sequence, your mind tends to flag it everywhere it appears, a pattern known as the Baader-Meinhof effect.
Where the idea comes from
Finding meaning in numbers is old. Numerology traces back to Babylonia and Sumer, and the Babylonians, Egyptians and Greeks all gave numbers symbolic weight, with the Greek philosopher Pythagoras often credited with early numerology.
The idea of angel numbers itself is recent. The name is widely credited to the New Age author Doreen Virtue, and her book Angel Numbers 101 set out the meanings that many writers still use. In angel-number writing, each sequence takes its character from the digit it repeats.

Numerologists give three double digits a special place. 11, 22 and 33 are the master numbers: 11 is the visionary, 22 is the architect and 33 is the one who shares the work with the world. 22 is the master builder.
