The Empress in brief

In the Rider-Waite tradition, The Empress stands for abundance, nurturing, creativity and the fruitful life of the natural world. Modern readers often take it as a call to care for oneself and others and to let new ideas grow, while the reversed card points to creative block, dependence or care that turns smothering.

Labyrinthos and Biddy Tarot both read her as the Earth Mother archetype. Waite called her “the fruitful mother of thousands” and, above all things, “universal fecundity.”

The card’s picture

Waite described “a stately figure, seated, having rich vestments and royal aspect”, a daughter of heaven and earth. Her diadem is made of twelve stars gathered in a cluster, and the symbol of Venus is on a shield resting near her. A field of corn ripens in front of her and a waterfall runs beyond it. Her scepter is topped by the globe of this world.

Waite read her as “the Earthly Paradise” and as the door through which an entrance is made into this life. He also wrote that most old attributions of the card were “completely wrong on the symbolism.”

Modern guides add detail. Biddy Tarot reads the twelve stars as the months of the year and the cycles of the natural world, and the pomegranate pattern on her robe as fertility. Biddy Tarot reads the forest and stream around her as her bond with Mother Earth, and the wheat in the foreground as the abundance of a recent harvest. Labyrinthos reads the Venus sign on her cushions as love, harmony and fertility.

Upright meaning

Waite’s divinatory list for the upright Empress is fruitfulness, action, initiative and length of days. Waite’s list also holds the unknown, the clandestine, difficulty, doubt and ignorance.

Labyrinthos reads the upright card as a deep bond with the feminine side of life, linked to fertility, expression, creativity and nurturing. Labyrinthos also reads it as a signal to be kind to oneself and to spend time in nature, and as the birth of a new idea, business or project.

Biddy Tarot reads The Empress as a card of abundance, a period of growth in which long-held hopes come to fruition, and as a prompt to pause and offer gratitude for what has been created. Biddy Tarot also reads it as a call to connect with the senses, to create beauty and to express oneself through art, music or a new hobby. Biddy Tarot adds that a person in tune with The Empress often takes on a nurturing role toward others, from compassion and support.

Reversed meaning

Waite listed the reversed Empress as light, truth, the unraveling of involved matters and public rejoicings, and noted another reading of vacillation.

Modern readers turn the reversal toward balance. Labyrinthos reads the reversed card as losing one’s own strength by putting too much effort into other people’s affairs, so that care becomes neglect of oneself or smothering of loved ones. Labyrinthos also reads it as relying on others to make decisions, and as a call to build confidence in one’s own actions.

Biddy Tarot reads the reversed Empress as a call to put self-love and self-care first, and as a creative block, often from worry about what others will think. Biddy Tarot adds that the mothering role can be taken too far, into overprotective or controlling behavior.

The Empress in love

In love, Labyrinthos reads the upright Empress as a loving, nurturing and caring partner, and as a stable, serious and committed relationship. Labyrinthos also links the card with motherhood.

Reversed, Labyrinthos reads the card as a partner who is too smothering or controlling, or one unable to express feelings. Labyrinthos also reads it as a sign that self-worth may need a boost, and as an encouragement for couples to spend quality time caring for each other.

The Empress in career

For work, Labyrinthos reads the upright Empress as a creative and passionate period, with ideas being put to work in projects. Labyrinthos also reads it as a nurturing and generous attitude at work, making a more harmonious and welcoming place for coworkers.

Reversed, Labyrinthos reads the card as a job that feels stale, tedious and unfulfilling, with little progress in skills. Labyrinthos also reads it as insecurity at work, and frames the card as a prompt to sort out which problems need an outer change and which need inner growth, such as confidence and communication.

The Empress and money

Labyrinthos reads the upright Empress in money questions as material comfort and a generous mood, a wish to share with friends and family.

Reversed, Labyrinthos reads the card as feeling insecure about money even when things are stable, and frames it as a prompt for inner reflection on where that feeling comes from.

The Empress as feelings

As feelings, Labyrinthos reads the upright Empress as warmth and affection: someone who sees another person as nurturing, comforting and inspiring, and who hopes to grow together. Labyrinthos also reads it as one’s own surge of creativity and emotional fulfillment.

Reversed, Labyrinthos reads insecurity or emotional distance, with affection held back by self-doubt. Labyrinthos also reads the reversed card as one’s own disconnection from desires and creativity, and as a prompt to explore what truly nurtures the spirit.
